A NATURAL REVIVAL

Matthew Williamson is evolving, becoming more accessible than ever. His woman is moving well beyond the red carpet and party circuit: she’s in the park, on the street, running errands and generally ballin’ around town.

Williamson’s trademark for nearly 15 years has been bright and saturated colors, large-scale prints, hand embroidery and refined, bohemian style. Notably, the designer shifted from India-centric style to an obvious Japanese inspiration for Resort 2012. Now, with MW Matthew Williamson, he formally diffuses the designer tier, conceiving a full, 250-piece collection. Intended for younger audiences, albeit with a mature style sensibility, the Fall 2011 debut incorporates psychedelic patterns, animal prints and metallic hues.

The British designer, a Central Saint Martin’s graduate and former Pucci designer, has established a hungry client base beyond his well known cache of celebrities like Sienna Miller, Jade Jagger and Kate Moss. Williamson has proven to be a draw across low, mid or high markets via collaborations for H&M, Macy’s, Swarovski, Bulgari, Linda Farrow, Charlotte Olympia and Bedenhams.

Further additions to the Matthew Williamson universe, like menswear and bridal, are rapidly shifting the brand into a full lifestyle vision. As shot by photographer Olivia Beasley, Williamson’s girl is a city girl—she’s thoughtful, comfortable in her own skin and seeking solidarity by recharging among nature. And, most importantly, she remembers that temperament throughout daily life. —Michael Cohen
