Archive 1887

Archive 1887 and its vintage-inspired music T-shirts are the embodiment of the belief that you are, essentially, what you wear. Or rather, you listen to what you wear.

An LA-based company that launched in 2010, Archive 1887 has reinvented the tired band T-shirt. Consulting the Sony Music archives, each T-shirt features musical icons from Miles Davis to David Bowie and comes with a special kind of gift with purchase. An online code issued with every Archive 1887 shirt unlocks access to a playlist of the featured artist’s music. Background information regarding the career of the musician and the when’s and where’s of the image itself are also provided. Not only does Archive 1887 continue the celebration of some of the greatest musicians, but it also salutes lesser-known (but equally talented) photographers.

So while we may indeed be what we wear, and while we certainly listen to what we wear, Archive 1887 makes clothing educational. The next time you ask a new acquaintance to delve into the contents of his or her iTunes library, prepare yourself for a musical history lesson, the likes of which Sony itself has helped to orchestrate.
