GREEN AND GORGEOUS

Natural and organic beauty products are cropping up all over. SOMA examines a few of the best.

EYE MAKEUP: JOSIE MARAN REM PEN

Model Josie Maran was motivated to create her eco-friendly cosmetics line after countless hours spent in makeup artists’ chairs, asking whether there were products out there that were effective but also good for the skin. While on a shoot in France, Maran discovered the moisturizing and healing properties of Argan Oil, which has been incorporated into most of her formulas. Maran’s REM Pen is a truly unique product in the natural makeup sector, for both its inspired packaging and punchy pigments. REM stands for Rapid Eye Makeup, as Maran claims it takes only 20 seconds to create limitless eye looks with it. On one side of the luxuriously packaged pen, there is a gel liner infused with nourishing Argan Oil, which soothes and protects sensitive eyelids. It glides on smoothly, making it simple to create a precise winged effect. On the other end is a creamy coordinating Argan eye shadow, which delivers a pop of color that lasts all day. Our pick: the Black+Peacock duo. $32.

HAIR PRODUCT: JOHN MASTERS ORGANICS SEA MIST

John Masters Organics was launched by the hairstyling wunderkind more than 20 years ago, when he began mixing herbal formulas in his kitchen sink. The brand now represents a full line of luxury organic hair, skin and body products designed for people who want to look good without the toxins. To give hair a beachy, tousled look, Masters created his Sea Mist sea salt spray, which contains natural sea salt and organic lavender. $17.

NAIL POLISH: SCOTCH NATURALS WATERCOLORS

Nail polish is generally a toxic product, often containing toluene, formaldehyde and heavy metals.  Ginny Cardenas, founder of Arizona-based Scotch Naturals, changed all that when she devised a non-toxic, water-based formula that still delivers all of the color and performance of salon brands. The extra drying time is worth the end result—healthy nails with no need for a base or top coat. Our favorite: Stiletto, a shocking pink shade. $15.

SKIN TREATMENT: NUDE SKINCARE CLARIFYING WATER

NUDE Skincare was founded by Bryan Meehan, the London-based nutrition guru also behind Fresh & Wild natural health food stores. After feeding the body, he decided to ‘feed’ the skin—the body’s largest organ—with natural, effective ingredients. Bryan’s partner, Ali Hewson, the Irish businesswoman and activist perhaps best known as Bono’s wife, brought her expertise in the ethical business realm to the table, and NUDE was born. NUDE products are bio-compatible, which means that they incorporate ingredients recognized by the body, repairing and renewing at a cellular level, with visible results. NUDE Skincare’s Clarifying Water is effective on a broad range of skin types, helping to balance, soothe, smooth and refresh the complexion using potent extracts of orange floral water, Siberian ginseng, Irish moss and natural Beta Hydroxy Acids. $20.

LIPSTICK: CARGO PLANTLOVE

Canadian cosmetics brand Cargo is known for innovative formulas and eco-conscious packaging, and has become a go-to line for film and fashion professionals. Their PlantLove collection uses biodegradable packaging made entirely of corn and potent organic ingredients. The newest collection was designed in collaboration with Hollywood celebrities. Try Maria, a sheer poppy red cream designed with Maria Menounos. $20

PERFUME: RICH HIPPIE

Perfume was once a natural concoction derived from fresh ingredients and wine alcohol. Budget-conscious fragrance companies have since turned to synthetic chemicals, but Rich Hippie has taken the trade back to its roots. Made using wine alcohol and organic extracts, their scents don’t come cheap at $255 per 1/2 oz. bottle, with an Eau de Parfum at $38. Our favorite: Psychedelic, a unisex blend of vanilla bean, ginger root, and orange peel.
